The most dangerous thing about being exposed to the sun is the ultraviolet (UV) rays that the sun releases. These rays penetrate deep into the skin and damage cells, which are then at risk of becoming cancerous.
Sunburn also causes the top layers of skin to release chemicals that make blood vessels swell and leak fluids.
Getting sunburnt also makes the skin painful and makes it look bad: it turns red and feels hot, and severe sunburn can lead to swelling and blisters.
