First date fashion advice
A first date is daunting as it is, without having to worry about finding the perfect outfit that will show your interest while feeling comfortable and attractive. Here's some advice for picking the right outfit for a first date...
In dating, appearance makes an impression before personality, which is why you want to look your very best for the first date.
Contrary to popular belief, the way to attract a decent spouse isn't by dressing provocatively but rather to look comfortable and confident in what you're wearing.
While rummaging through your cupboard to find the perfect ensemble keep the saying “leave something to the imagination” in mind to avoid showing too much skin.
The venue and date itself also comes into play because you never want to be overdressed nor underdressed. First dates aren't usually a surprise so be sure to ask the right questions in order to find the right outfit.
A casual venue means you can go for a casual look. This is your chance to wear your favourite pair of jeans paired with a dressier top than usual with low heels or pumps. It's vitally important to be comfortable because not only will you be sitting in a movie for two hours, but he will also be comfy and casual. Hint: the woman in the main picture? She's overdressed.

Cocktail bars are usually dressy and a bit more chic than casual, so opt for a flattering dress like an LBD or cocktail dress (like this one with lace overlay and Peter Pan collar, right, from Zando.co.za, R349) with some heels and accessories to match. Don't feel like you need to go over-the-top, be simple and sexy – classy sexy, not sleazy sexy.
Jeans may be a bit too casual so in order to look the part, go for a pair of black trousers or a pencil skirt paired with a lace or chiffon top and a fitted jacket to go over in case there's a nip in the air. The restaurant may or may not be well lit so opt for a minimal and natural look with your makeup so that the real you shines through.

This is the time to haul your maxi dress (like this cute coral one from Fashion Express, R160, left, available from August) or even a high-waisted skirt out of the cupboard. A dress/skirt is the ultimate feminine look. Your chosen ensemble paired with some cute sandals and a sun hat will keep you comfortable and confident in nature's surroundings. Be sure to take a cardigan or a jacket with in case it gets chilly.
A concert isn't the ideal first date because there'll be hardly any talking but if this is the chosen venue then you must be prepared. Closed shoes are a must for concerts to avoid trampled toes. Depending on the concert you can either go for a rock chic look – some skinny jeans paired with a slouchy tee and blazer with some cool sneakers or more of a pulled together look also wearing a pair of skinny jeans with a pair of boots and trendy top.
Bear in mind that the things you may think are vitally important may not be that important to your date. He/she may not know the difference between Prada and nada so don't put too much pressure on yourself to dress according to what you think they might like. At the end of the night you still have to like yourself.
